1.3 Domestic violence (U.K.)

This subject is hush-hush. It is never touched by reporters of Indian mass media, but the picture is frightening. In the U.K. two women are killed by their partners every week. Let us look at two recent cases.

1.3.1 In Truro, Tina Nash was blinded by her partner Shane Jenkin.

This happened in July 2011, and was reported by Devon and Cornwall Police on Friday

18 May 2012.  Daily Mail online 21 May 2012 – by Amy Oliver

Shane Jenkin is currently locked up in a mental hospital after gouging out his girlfriend's eyes and trying to strangle her. Speaking to the Daily Mirror from a phone in a psychiatric unit, he had said: 'I didn't start the whole thing that night. She's the one that attacked me. I'm not as evil as everyone has made out, I'm actually really chilled.' (How disgusting that Daily Mirror should even take a call from such a person!)

Miss Nash told ITV’s This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby how Jenkin still haunted her. During the interview Tina Nash removed her sunglasses to show the injuries inflicted on her by ex Shane Jenkin.

The mother-of-two from Cornwall repeated her anguish at never being able to see her children again and issued a stark warning to other victims of domestic violence. Looking directly into the camera, Miss Nash said: 'Once they hit you once, it ain’t gonna stop, that's just the start. They've already overstepped that boundary then. Get out and don't go back.’

Earlier this month, Jenkin, 33, was handed an indeterminate sentence with a minimum of six years, which he will serve in a mental hospital, after admitting grievous bodily harm with intent. And yet the guy had the audacity to appeal on 22 June 2012!! Miss Nash now wears a prosthetic eye in her left socket but wears sunglasses which she removed during the This Morning interview. Losing her sight felt like being buried alive, she said.  ‘I felt so ill inside,' she said. 'I felt like I was going to die at any second.’ It was her two sons that kept Miss Nash going and she says she is now happy at home but wants to highlight the dangers of a violent partner.

There were 58 comments. One important one read - This will happen time and time again and unfortunately if Miss Nash had listened to the people before her who have had hideous things done to them by violent partners then she herself would have left the first time this monster laid a finger on her. The sad fact is that every abused woman thinks her man is different so I am afraid people preaching after the event is a waste of time and energy as it will only ever fall on deaf ears. The best anyone can do is to rally the government for stricter sentences for these creatures.  Judith, Durham

16 July 1912 – BBC Radio5 at 07:45

Hezel Blair, former minister in Tony Blair’s cabinet said  – girls should be able to check on criminal records of their partners. This was related to above horrific attack. Two women are killed every week due to domestic violence.

1.3.2 Essex Police criticised in report on Braintree double murders

BBC Radio 4 at 12:15 on Wednesday 22nd August 2012

Essex Police were criticised for not protecting a woman and her daughter who were shot dead by her ex-partner, though she had complained 14 times. Essex Police failed to act on murdered Christine Chambers' cries for help in the two months leading up to her death, a damning report has revealed. Ms Chambers, 38, and her 2½-year-old daughter Shania were shot dead at their home in Bartram Avenue, Braintree, in the early hours of June 6 last year. Her ex-partner David Oakes, 50, a former bouncer, was convicted of their murders and given two life sentences, with no chance of release, at Chelmsford Crown Court at a three-week trial in May.

Yesterday, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) released its investigation into the case, which highlighted a systemic failure by the force in the run up to the double murders.

The IPCC found between March 2009 and June 2011 a "catalogue of incidents" involving Ms Chambers and Oakes, of Steeple, near Maldon, had been treated "largely in isolation by officers". The investigation identified 16 incidents between the pair in the two years leading up to deaths of Ms Chambers and her daughter. The watchdog found Essex Police failed to recognised any pattern between the reported events and failed to identify or act on the "evident escalation" in Ms Chambers' calls for help in the eight weeks before her death, at a time when officers had been told her relationship with Oakes had ended.

The report also revealed that Ms Chambers' fear of her violently abusive ex-partner was not taken into account as a potential motive for her not pursuing further complaints against him.

Ms Cerfontyne said: "This is a tragic and disturbing case and the investigation has identified several key issues which apply to many other cases where domestic homicide is the outcome.”Many women are reluctant to pursue criminal proceedings against abusive partners, sometimes even to seek help at all. There are many reasons for this, and often it is fear that they will exacerbate the situation and increase the danger they face. "Undoubtedly this poses significant challenges for the police and other agencies, but it is essential in these situations that everything possible is done to protect the victims and their children."

She said an apparent unwillingness to give evidence against a violent partner is often due to fear and is a sign of "vulnerability" and not "culpability".

Assistant Chief Constable Maurice Mason said: "You would think that a man capable of such horror would have a history of violence. Oakes did not: he had no convictions or cautions for violence.”

"The IPCC also stated that there was no information that Oakes had access to a firearm. Essex Police acts promptly and decisively whenever it receives credible intelligence about illegally-held weapons.

"In the last year, Essex Police assessed and managed over 32,000 incidents of domestic abuse. This means that around 88 domestic abuse incidents are reported to the force every day of the year. On a typical day, about a quarter of all Essex Police resources may be involved in investigating, assessing and managing domestic abuse cases."

Commission’s findings

Important information about David Oakes' violence towards Christine was known to agencies involved in the child custody proceedings, but either not known by police or not taken sufficiently into account in their risk assessments.

Note – This is the reality of life in U.K. in 2012. What was life for women in U.K, 150 years back (in 1862) when East India Company army suppressed the great revolt against their rule in India? We had many admirers of their rule at that time, like Mahatma Phule

1.4 London Olympics - August 2012

We are glad to report that our friend Dr Shreedhar Vaidya participated as a Volunteer for the games. We should all participate in similar activities in the societies we live in.

1.5 British Census 2011

Did you notice that –?

All Christians are under one heading.

No chance to say whether you are a Catholic / Anglican/ Protestant/ Greek Orthodox.

Similarly there is no subdivision among Muslims. One cannot say if they are Shias / Sunnis / Ahmedias or other sect.

But Sikhs are separated from Hindus.

This is the attitude of the British even today!!

1.6 Attitude of Hindu Temples in U.K.

On 16 July we were surprised to receive following E Mail from Rajiv Varma of America

Dear Dr Godbole,

I need some help from you.
Dr. Saradindu Mukherji from Delhi is visiting U.K. - next 2 weeks, and one of my friends in London is trying to arrange for a public program for him. The topic is related to Plight of Hindus in Bangladesh. He is having difficulty in finding a suitable venue. Most temples want to charge fees. Our local London activists do not have that money. I am reaching out to you, so that if you wish to help, you could help my activist friend find a venue (free of cost) for this program. If possible for you, please reach out to your contacts to see if a venue could be arranged for. Capacity needed - 30 max - less will do.
Rajiv Varma / Houston, TX, USA

Godbole tried and got following E Mail

Godbole ji,
Thanks for making the effort. Dr. Mukherji was able to give his lecture at a local temple - HOWEVER - he was required to NOT address any political issue. So he spoke on Swami Vivekanand. This did not serve the purpose of the subject of Bangladeshi Hindus. / Rajiv

1.7 Indians can’t work after study in U.K.
We received fowling E Mail from Krishnakant Kapadia on 7 April 2012
A facility that allowed Indian students to work here for two years after their courses are over will be closed from Friday as part of the Cameron government's drive to cut migration, which may put-off those aspiring to study in the UK.

Under the Tier 1 (Post-study work) route, Indian and other non-EU students were able to take up work for two years here after the completion of their university courses. The facility was popular among self-financing Indian students who sought to recover some of the expenses of studying here by working for two years. The facility also enabled them to gain work experience in the UK that was seen to aid career prospects in India.
There are already reports of falling numbers of Indian students applying for university courses starting from September 2012.

International students are estimated to contribute over 14 billion pounds annually to the UK economy. The closure of the post-study route was opposed by Universities in UK and the British Council, given the possibility that the measure would reduce Britain's attraction as a destination for students from India and other non-EU countries.

Our comments – This is clearly a racist move and what was the response of MM Singh? Nothing. But Tesco is welcome to open its supermarkets in India._

1.8 Hillsborough disaster – truth at last

The 1989 Hillsborough disaster was a human crush which occurred during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs on 15 April 1989 at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England. The crush resulted in the deaths of 96 people and injuries to 766 others. The disaster remains the worst stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the world's worst football disasters.

While opposing supporters were segregated in the stadium, Liverpool fans were allocated the Leppings Lane stand, accessed by a limited number of turnstiles. As the entry point became overcrowded before kick-off, police ordered an exit gate to be opened, allowing supporters to enter a tunnel leading directly to two enclosures (pens). The ensuing influx of supporters caused crushing and some fans climbed over side fences to escape. Moments after kick-off, a crush barrier broke and fans began to fall on top of each other. The game was stopped after six minutes. To carry away the injured, supporters tore down advertising hoardings and emergency services were called to provide assistance. Of the 96 fatalities, 14 were admitted to hospital.

There was an official inquiry by Taylor into the disaster in 1990, but it merely led to the elimination of standing terraces at all major football stadiums in England, Wales and Scotland.

History of the panel and its findings

In the years after the disaster there was a feeling among relatives of victims that the full facts were not in the public domain and a suspicion that some facts were deliberately covered up. The Hillsborough Family Support Group, led by Trevor Hicks, campaigned for the release of all relevant documents.

On the 20th anniversary of the disaster, government minister Andy Burnham called for the police, ambulance, and all other public bodies to release documents which had not been made available to Taylor in 1989. This led to the formation of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, which, on 12 September 2012, concluded that no Liverpool fans were responsible for the deaths, and that attempts had been made by the authorities to conceal what had happened. The report prompted immediate apologies from Prime Minister David Cameron, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police David Crompton, Football Association Chairman David Bernstein and Kelvin MacKenzie, then-editor of The Sun, for their organisations' respective roles.

The Panel concluded that up to 41 of the 96 who had died might have been saved had some failings been addressed. The report revealed "multiple failures" by other emergency services and public bodies which contributed to the death toll.

The panel found that South Yorkshire Police and other emergency services had made a "strenuous attempt" to deflect blame for the disaster from themselves onto Liverpool supporters. The findings concluded that 164 witness statements had been amended and 116 statements unfavourable to South Yorkshire Police had been removed. South Yorkshire Police had performed blood alcohol tests on the victims, some of them children, and ran computer checks on the national police database in an attempt to "impugn their reputation". The report concluded that the then Conservative MP for Sheffield Hallam, Irvine Patrick, passed inaccurate and untrue information from the police to the press.

After publication, the Hillsborough Families Support Group called for new inquests for the victims. They also called for prosecutions for unlawful killing, corporate manslaughter and perversion of the course of justice in respect of the actions of the police both in causing the disaster and covering up their actions

South Yorkshire police announced it would refer the actions of its officers to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). West Yorkshire Police announced that they would refer their now Chief Constable, Sir Norman Bettison, to the IPCC in mid September; by early October Bettison had announced his early retirement, becoming the first senior figure to step down since publication of the report. The IPCC announced on 12 October 2012 that it was to investigate wrong-doing in a number of areas including: the failure of the police to declare a major incident; failure to close the tunnel to the stands which led to overcrowded pens, despite evidence that the tunnel had in the past been closed in such circumstances; changes made to the statements of police officers; actions which misled Parliament and the media; shortcomings of previous investigations; and the role played by Norman Bettison. --------

The IPCC investigation amounts to the biggest independent review of the police in the UK ever conducted. In their announcement, the IPCC praised the tenacity of the Hillsborough families' long campaign for truth and justice.

Our comments – So, after 23 years truth at last emerges. But, that is the British way of life.

Even retired police officers will now face prosecution. On 12 September (Wednesday) British newspapers had an interesting headline. Here is the REAL TRUTH. So, there are two types of truths, Ordinary truth and Real Truth. Let us hope one day truth about Taj Mahal too will be accepted.

1.8 Attacks on Sikhs in America

By NBC News and wire services / August 5, 2012

A gunman opened fire on Sunday morning at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in Old Creek, south of Milwaukee along lake Michigan; killing six people and wounding at least three others, including a police officer, before being shot to death, police said. A temple committee member, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal-Sentinel that people inside the temple described the shooter as a white male in his 30s."We have no idea," he said of the motive. "It's pretty much a hate crime. It's not an insider."

Sikh rights groups have reported a rise in bias attacks since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Washington-based Sikh Coalition has reported more than 700 incidents in the U.S. since 9/11, which advocates blame on anti-Islamic sentiment. Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims, but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say.

Sikhism is a monotheistic faith that was founded in South Asia more than 500 years ago. It has roughly 27 million followers worldwide. Observant Sikhs do not cut their hair; male followers often cover their heads with turbans -- which are considered sacred -- and refrain from shaving their beards. They are neither Muslim nor Hindu. (That is the attitude of White Americans today)

* World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) expressed its deepest anguish at the tragedy.

* Muslims of America took advantage of the situation and sent their sympathies and collected funds for the victims. They of course wanted to stress that Sikhs are NOT Hindus.

* To honour victims of the shooting, US President Barack Obama has ordered that the American flags be flown at half-staff at all the US government buildings and its diplomatic missions overseas till August 10.

 From: Vikram <vikramsenkaushik@yahoo.com

Here is a report 'Sikhs have faced over 700 attacks since 9/11' with some details.

Some Sikhs had their houses vandalised, others were spat upon. In some extreme cases, they were set upon by groups of people and beaten in a country which is home to about 700,000 Sikhs.

According to a CNN compilation, the attacks since 9/11 include :-
* Sep 15, 2001: An aircraft mechanic named Frank Roque guns down Balbir Singh Sodhi outside a Mesa (Arizona) gas station.
* Dec 2001: Two men beat store owner Surinder Singh 20 times with metal poles in Los Angeles, while uttering, “We’ll kill bin Laden today”.
* March 2004: Vandals scrawl the words, “It’s not your country” in blue spray paint on the wall of the Gurdwara Sahib temple in Fresno, California. The temple was also
vandalised a year earlier.
* July 2004: Rajinder Singh Khalsa is beaten unconscious by six men in New York City, after they taunt him and his friend about their turban. The beating leaves Khalsa with multiple fractures.
* Aug 2006: Iqbal Singh is stabbed in the neck with a steak knife in San Jose, California, while he was standing in the carport of his house. The attacker later tells police he wanted to “kill a Taliban”.
* Oct 2008: Ajit Singh Chima is punched and kicked in the head while out on his daily walk in Carteret, New Jersey. The attacker does not take anything from Chima.
* January 2009: Jasmir Singh is attacked outside a New York grocery store, with men shouting racial slurs. Two years later, his father is attacked.
* Nov 2010: Harbhajan Singh, a Sikh cab driver, is beaten by two passengers in Sacramento, California, with one of them calling him “Osama bin Laden”.
* March 2011: Gurmej Singh Atwal and Surinder Singh are gunned down in Elk Grove, California, while out on their afternoon walk. They are not robbed and had no enemies, family members say.
* Feb 2012: A Sikh temple under construction in Sterling Heights, Michigan, is defaced, with graffiti on the wall depicting a gun and a Christian cross. Someone also scrawls “Mohmed” on the wall.

Our comment – How strange that not one Muslim was killed nor one Mosque attacked.

1.9 Taj Mahal :

1.9.1 No need to resort to childish arguments

Following E Mail has been circulating for quite some time. Godbole’s comments

(3 April 2012) are in italics.  There is no need to resort to such childish arguments. These make us a laughing stock.

Subject: TaajMahal or Raazmahal?

O LOVE - really?
Should the Taj mahal be called Razmahal (Raz = secret)

WE all know TAJ MAHAL as a symbol of Eternal LOVE …

But the other lesser known FACTS :

1. MUMTAZ was SHAHJAHAN’s 4th wife, out of his SEVEN wives (GREAT).

(Krishna and Shivaji had 8 wives each)

2. Shahjahan killed Mumtaz’s husband to marry her (EXCELLENT)

(False. It was Jehangir who killed husband of Noor Jahan)

3. Mumtaz dies in her 14th delivery (WOW).

(So? On the contrary it shows his deep attachment to her. Having 14 children was not uncommon. How big was Tagore's family? I think he was the 13th child in the family.)

4. Shahjahan then married Mumtaz’s sister (AMAZING).

(False.)

Where the Hell is LOVE here, some one please explain!!!!

1.9.2 P N Oak’s book – Taj Mahal the true story.

Recently we have been sent a copy in PDF format. We offer some comments –

(a) It is not clear when the book was published, but according to British Library it was in 1989.

(b) It is also not clear from the preface what the difficulty Oak faced in producing new edition of his book. He himself was the publisher of the 1974 edition. If he was short of funds he could have easily appealed to his friends. In 1981, I contributed towards his book Hindunchaya Visharashtracha Itihas. There were many others and the book was published.

In 1984/85 he published his voluminous book World Vedic Heritage. No shortage of funds there.

In 1987, he came to England to attend an international conference at Southampton University. He appealed to people in Maharashtra, “I wish to attend this gathering, but I have no funds. Neither the Government of India nor any state government will give me money. Would you help? AND people did help. He came to England. Again, no shortage of funds.

(c) Lost opportunities.

In 1977, Oak came to London at the invitation of Dr Bakshi of Southall. He tried to contact various institutions and persons and request them to arrange his lectures. He was met with refusals except School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). So, he had plenty of time to do his research. SOAS library used to be open to all, with the books and publications on open shelf. India Office Library was also open to all. Unfortunately Oak did not utilise this opportunity. Just one week would have given him plenty of correct and relevant information.

In 1987, Oak came to England again and stayed with Dr Bakshi. Still he did not spend any time in public libraries. Then why curse others?

>> Oak travelled all over Hindusthan for his lectures / slide shows. But it seems that he never visited Burhanpur. If he did, he would have realised a vital point. Mumtaz died at Burhanpur but was buried at Zainabad which is across the river Tapi (some 2,400 ft wide)

Why did Shahjahan cross the river? The answer is clear. Under the pretext of burying Mumtaz, Shahjahan occupied another property of Raja Jaisingh!!

(d) During his correspondence with me (Godbole) in the 1980s, P N Oak said – “When I publish a new edition of my book on Taj Mahal I am going to recast the whole subject because there have been so many new revelations.”

Alas, this did not happen. There is no change from the 1974 edition with the exception of C14 testing. And here again Oak missed an excellent opportunity.

Prof Marvin Mills of New York carried out C14 test on a sample of wood cutting from a timber door at the exit from N/E or N/W tower (Burj) of Taj Mahal. Once the age of timber was established, Prof Mills was convinced that Shahjahan did not build Taj Mahal.

Oak fails to state that timber doors at exits from both towers have been removed by Government of India and no C14 testing can now be carried out. The openings are crudely blocked up with brickwork. We have photos showing both the timber doors and bricked up openings.

Later, Prof Mills then turned his attention to (so called) Mosques in Spain. The authorities there have no fear of Muslims and allowed Mills to take samples of bricks and mortars in various mosques. They gave the results expected. These (so called) Mosques pre-date Arab (Moors) invaders.

(e) Two letters exposing the falsity of Taj legend were published in the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. One by Oak (June 1980), other by me (Godbole, Sept 1980). These remain unchallenged even today but Oak does not mention these at all. WHY?

(f) One of close relatives of Oak said to me, “If I were to edit Oak’s book I will delete half the material as superfluous.” For example, Badshahnama says, ‘Mumtaz (Arjumand Banu Begum) died on 17 Zi-il-kada 1040 A.H (7 June 1631).’ So, why waste time in saying again and again that Mumtaz died some time between 1629 and 1631?

Oak should have removed all his rhetoric, put forward his arguments and let the readers conclude.

(g) In 1973, while carrying out routine maintenance, Archaeological Survey of India discovered some old fountains underneath existing ones. But Oak gives no photos or diagrams. Why? A picture is worth thousand words. Oak does not even give reference to any newspaper report.

(h) Badshahnama

Confession in Badshahnama is a trump card – to be played last, not at start of play. A lawyer reserves a trump card till the end of his argument.

> Moreover, even in 1989, Oak gave an impression that he translated pages 402 / 403 of Badshahnama Vol I from Persian into English. This is false. Credit goes to a Kashmiri Pandit who argued with Oak. In 1968 the two went to Government of India Archives in New Delhi. When the Pandit started to read Badshahnama he came to pages 402/403 and realised that historians never bothered to read the Persian text. What would have happened if the Pandit was dishonest and said – he finds no reference either way? Credit must be given where credit is due

>> Godbole also had pointed out that during the British Raj British officers had translated from Persian into English –

Baburnama

Humayun-Nama

Akbar-Nama / Ain-e-Akabari

Tazuk-i-Jehangiri

So, why NOT Badshahnama? The reason is obvious.

>>> Persian text of Badshahnama was published by Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1872, How come not a single European / American scholar or Society has been interested in translating Badshahnama from Persian into English for more than 100 years?

(i) I started producing Newsletters from 1 June 1980 onwards explaining our historical findings. During the first 13 newsletters I have given extensive new information on Taj Mahal. Unfortunately Oak did not use any of it. For example,

> Aurangzeb’s letter to his father Shahjahan complaining about extensive leakages in Taj Mahal was translated into English and published by Archaeological Survey of India in 1946. (ref Ancient India)

>> Sir Yadunath Sarkar refers to Badshahnama Volume I page 403 and tells us that a spacious tract of land south of city of Agra was purchased by Shahjahan from Raja Jaisingh.

(j) Chapter on Some clarifications

Most of the questions are childish. Oak did not have to publish them just because people ask them. It merely lowers the tone of his arguments.

(k) A clever lawyer extracts confessions from a witness. A typical case being actor Paul Newman in his role as a lawyer for defence.

In 1982 during my correspondence with Dr Mate of Deccan College, Pune, I asked him, “Did the ASI ever carry out an Archaeological Survey of Taj Mahal.” He could not say – yes. He could not say - no.

That is more important than other frustrations Oak suffered at the hands of ASI.

(l) Foundation wells.

I have pointed out that ASI reports of 1936-37/ 1957/58 and 1958/59 do mention foundation wells. The last two reports have photos of the foundation wells.

It would have been prudent to mention these rather than say that deep foundation wells were required.

(m) The use of the word we (Royal we) is inappropriate. Its equivalent ahmi is quite acceptable in Marathi. In 2012, in her letter expressing gratitude during her diamond jubilee of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II uses the word I – not we.

Neither Mr Oak nor Mr Arvind Ghosh who published the book in America, are alive. The notes are meant for devotees of Oak.

1.10 Savarkar

1.10.1 Another book on Savarkar – in Marathi of course!

In June 2012 we were told that a new book entitled

Savarkar – Dhagadhagate yadnyakund by Mr Shreekant V Nerlekar– is available on internet as an E book.

Godbole asked his friends – does this book tell us anything new?

NO.

Once again it is in Marathi. So, how is it going to reach millions of Non-Marathi people?

There was no answer.

The friends kept on saying that we should admire new efforts.

And who is going to read this book? Marathi people who are in their late 60s or early 70s? What good does it do?

1.10.2 Babarao Savarkar

This great patriot, freedom fighter and elder brother of Veer Savarkar died on 16 March 1945 at Sangli. In his memory Hindu Jagruti circulated an E Mail describing his life in brief. It seems that even today we still do not know how to honour our heroes! Godbole sent following comments -

(1) Mazzini's biography - 1st edition was sold out like hot cake in June 1907. When Babarao announced his intention to publish the 2nd edition British Governor of Bombay Province banned the book as seditious.

(2) Kal creator Paranjape - should be Paranjape, editor of the paper Kal

(3) In 1908 Tilak was sentenced to TRANSPORTATION for six years to Mandalay. If he was merely sentenced to 6 years imprisonment why would they send him to Mandalay, some 3,000 miles away?

(4) Again you say that Babarao was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Andaman. WRONG. He was sentenced to TRANSPORTATION FOR LIFE and sent to Andaman Island. All his personal property was confiscated by British Authorities. His wife Yesubai was left homeless, penniless and destitute. (Did any congress leaders face such a calamity?)

(5) In a short article it is not possible to cover the turmoil between 1909 and 1921, but please DO NOT SAY that “after completion of his sentence in 1922 ......”

The fact is that Savarkar brothers were released from jail in Andaman in 1921 and sent to mainland India, but then they were separated. Babarao was kept in Bijapur jail and faced conditions worse than in Andaman Jail. It was after the uproar created by his younger brother Narayanrao that he was transferred to Sabarmati jail. He was released only when he was on the point of death.

 (6) Babarao recovered after great care by Dr Narayanrao, but due to prison life he had developed many disabilities. He suffered from migraine. He could not walk straight. His legs had to be covered with thick socks (like the ones worn by police who have to stand for a long time). It used to take even an hour to discharge urine. AND yet he still carried out so much work. He favoured creation of RSS. He and Dr Hedgewar toured the country extensively for expansion of RSS. Babarao attended many Adhikari Shikshan Vargas (Officer Training Camps)

(6) Babarao despised Gandhi for his constant appeasement of Muslims, but he did go to see him and ask him to seek release of revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh during Gandhi's talks with Viceroy Lord Irvine.

(7) Last parting

You say - In spite of very hard, difficult condition like weak financial position, adverse health, indifference of Hindus and Muslims who were waiting for an opportunity to destroy Hindus,

This does not make sense. You should have said - In spite of very hard, difficult condition like weak financial position, adverse health, indifference of Hindus he carried out many tasks..... Muslims were waiting for an opportunity to destroy Hindus. Muslims were not indifferent as you suggest.

1.10.3 "Burning for Freedom " a novel by Anurupa Cinar.
Anurupa Cinar is daughter of famous Marathi writer Indrayani Savakar. An Architect by profession, she lives in Massachusetts, America. Her novel Burning for freedom is based on life of Veer Savarkar and was published by Trafford Publishing (2012)
ISBN 9781426974984

1.10.4 Conference on Savarkar in London

Our friend Bharat Chauhan sent us the following Mail on 11 June

The third conference on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar will be held in London in the last week of April 2013, it was announced yesterday. The convenor of the conference Bhau Suradkar said that the conference which will be held for about three four days will comprise symposia, exhibitions, panel discussions and visit to historical places, reports PTI.

The conference is being jointly
organised by Swatantraveer Savarkar Seva Sangh of Thane, Swatantraveer Premi Mitra Mandal of Aurangabad, as well as London based Maharashtrian organisations.

Around 250 delegates are expected to attend the meet which will also deliberate upon the life and contribution of Savarkar to the country. The main conference will be held on April 20. During the event, delegates will get to visit places where Savarkar lived and see various historical locations he said. Delegates will also be taken to India House where Sawarkar lived in London and get to know more about his stay there.

1.10.5 Rationalism of Veer Savarkar

Copies of Marathi edition of above book by Godbole are nearly all sold out and a new

edition is planned. As all the paperwork of first edition was neatly preserved, printing can easily be done. Godbole is writing preface to the second edition. He wishes to stress that though extensive material on Savarkar is available in London it has not been much used.

1.11 Bomb blasts in Pune

As predicted in our Newsletter No 62 of June 2012 there were 5 bomb blasts in Pune on   1 August 2012. It does not take a genius to know that there were caused by Muslim terrorists. The five blasts took place between 7.30 pm and 7.45 pm in a radius of about 1 km. The spots were - outside Dena Bank branch on Jangali Maharaj Road, close to Bal Gandhrava Theatre, near a fast food joint on Deccan Road and Garware College.
The explosions, which took place on the eve of Raksha Bandhan festival, prompted the Maharashtra government to put the state on high alert. Delhi was also put on high alert following the blasts in Pune. DNA's Saikat Datta, a veteran internal security correspondent reports from Delhi, "Pune has had an unfortunate association with radical elements. The blasts come close after the anniversary of the Mumbai blasts last year. The Indian Mujahideen also recruited many of its cadres from Pune."

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/commentary_live-4-blasts-in-pune-5th-bomb-defused-ammonium-nitrate-9-volt-batteries-used_1722867

On 2nd August PTI reported – New Delhi: The Centre today described the near simultaneous explosions in Pune as a planned and coordinated act. Union home secretary R K Singh said forensic experts were examining the two unexploded IEDs and nature of the four blasts. "Since the blasts have taken place within an area of 500 metres and within a span of 45 minutes, it appears to be a coordinated act. I am sure there was a plan behind it," (how clever!) he told reporters.

Maharashtra home minister R R Patil was asked whether there could be a "saffron terror" angle to the incident, he said, "All angles are being probed and it will not be proper to comment at this stage." (So, there you are! RSS involvement cannot be ruled out)

1.12 Mumbai attacks case: Kasab pleads for mercy

This news came on 18 September. For details read the URL

http://www.dailypioneer.com/home/online-channel/top-story/95239-mumbai-attacks-case-kasab-pleads-for-mercy.html

(The massacre took place on 28 November 2008 when gunmen from Pakistan shot dead 126 people in Mumbai. Kasab was the only one to captured alive. He was tried and sentenced to death)

We should not be surprised if clemency is granted. After all we have picture of our beloved Bapu on all Rupee Notes. Moreover, is this not we Hindus did throughout history? Prithviraj Chavan defeated Muhammed Ghori but let him go. Only to be attacked by him again.

Allauddin Khilji caused havoc in Maharashtra and Gujarath in 1315. But when his son was captured by Rajputs, they let him go!

Did we get any co-operation from Pakistan? Did they send any wanted terrorists to us?

NO.

What about the local Muslims who had helped the Pakistani terrorists? Has any one been prosecuted?

NO.

1.13 Historians can mistakes too.

Setu Madhavrao Pagdi was a well known Marathi historian. He has written many articles on Indian History. But sadly, like others, he has some strange ideas about writing our history. In a book called Itihas and Kalpit (History and imagination) published in August 1988 he has complied some of his experiences of public perceptions/ absurd expectations/ difficult situations arising during his lectures and his own life.

He stresses that a subject has to be handled differently to suit audience. When talking about Shivaji in Gwalior, Pagdi had to pay more attention to Shivaji’s relations with Rajput Kings especially Ramsing (son of Raja Jaising), Rao Karna Rathod of Bikaner and others. The audience liked it.

The Pagdi says – Rajmama Vijayarae Shinde is a RAJPUT (p163).

This is false. Rajmata was from Royal Nepali family and her husband Maharaja Shinde was a Maratha. How can Pagdi make such a blunder? He passed M A. examination in 1931 and Rajmata was married in 1940 (or thereabouts). So, Pagdi has no excuse.

We would not have pointed this out, but Pagdi maintained dead silence on Taj Mahal.

Surely if he believed Taj Mahal was built by Shahjahan he would have written several articles taking Oak to task. He uttered NOT a single word.

So, we have to say that even historians like Pagdi do make mistakes

3.1.1 Indian Dalits find no refuge from caste in Christianity

BBC News South Asia - 14 September 2010 - By Swaminathan Natarajan BBC Tamil.

Many in India have embraced Christianity to escape the age-old caste oppression of the Hindu social order, but Christianity itself in some places is finding it difficult to shrug off the worst of caste discrimination.

In the town of Trichy, situated in the heart of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a wall built across the Catholic cemetery clearly illustrates how caste-based prejudice persists. Those who converted to Christianity from the formerly "untouchable" Hindu caste groups known as Dalits are allocated space for burial on one side of the wall, while upper-caste converts are buried on the other side.

The separating wall was built over six decades ago.

Caste discrimination is rampant in the Catholic Church.

Father Yesumariyan Jesuit lawyer, Dalit campaigner "This violates the Indian constitution. It is inhuman. It's humiliating," says Rajendiran, secretary general of Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, a small socio-political group that has announced a protest demanding the removal of the wall. The Catholic Church in India says it does not approve of caste discrimination. But it says it is helpless in resolving this issue.

"The burial ground is owned by private individuals, so we are not able to do anything about this. Even the local bishop is not going to the cemetery to perform rituals," says Father Vincent Chinnadurai, chairman of the Tamil Nadu state Commission for Minorities. He says there is a new cemetery in the town, where bodies are buried without any discrimination. Yet burials continue to take place in the controversial cemetery, presided over by Catholic priests. This practice is fading in the big cities and towns, but in some places in rural Tamil Nadu, caste-based graveyards are still in operation. Discrimination against Dalits persists in all strata of Indian society. Dalit Christians are demanding more proactive steps from the Church to remove the wall. Father Lourdunathan Yesumariyan, a Jesuit, practising lawyer and Dalit-Christian activist, says the Church has the legal power to remove the wall. Even though the cemetery is on privately owned land, he says, a recent high court judgement ruled that the Church has full responsibility as it administers the graveyard. "The failure to remove the wall only helps cement caste feelings," he adds.

Some years ago two Catholic priests demolished a small part of the wall. But the influential land-owning upper-caste Christian group rebuilt it.  The Church is meanwhile accused by critics of refusing to give "just representation" for Dalits in its power structure, even while it campaigns for a separate quota for the Dalit Christians in government jobs.

Fr Yesumariyan says: "In Tamil Nadu, over 70% of Catholics are Dalit converts. But only four out of 18 bishops are from the Dalit-Christian community. In many places influential caste groups have lobbied and made sure that only the person belonging to their caste is being appointed as bishop in their diocese." He says that in places where Dalit Christians are the majority, they often struggle to get the top job. Even though the archbishop of Tamil Nadu region is a Dalit Christian, he has been unable to improve the situation much for other members of his community in the Church.

Untouchablity 'everywhere'

In recent years a fixed number of jobs and seats have been earmarked in Catholic-run schools and colleges for members of the Dalit-Christian community.  There are estimated to be more than 17 million Catholics in India, but this is being challenged in the court on the grounds that "there is no caste in Christianity".

Fr Yesumariyan continues: "The Indian constitution says it has abolished untouchablity. But it is everywhere. In the same way, the Catholic Church says there is no caste bias but caste discrimination is rampant in the Church.

"There are hardly any inter-caste marriages among converted Christians. Until recently, Church-run magazines carried matrimonial advertisements containing specific caste references. Only after our protest they stopped it."

A few churches in Tamil Nadu have even been closed after Dalit Christians demanded a share in the administration.

"We say there is no caste in Christianity," says Fr Chinnadurai. "But in India, Christianity was not able to get rid of caste. Those who converted to Christianity brought their caste prejudices with them. We are trying our best to get rid of them."

3.1.2 Christian dalits: Adopted but Untouchable /T C G Menon    http://www.vijayvaani.com/FrmPublicDisplayArticle.aspx?id=2461

Sandhay Jain sent us this Mail on 17 September 2012

It is an irrefutable fact that Christian missionaries have been using all kinds of fraudulent means to convert the hapless dalits to Christianity, the purpose of which is to change the demography of India and bring it under foreign (i.e western) rule once again. Despite the tall claims of missionaries, Christianity has not redeemed some 20 million dalit Christians from social discrimination and untouchability. In fact, it has only added to their misery. Dalits were persuaded to accept faith in Jesus Christ in order to regain their purported ‘lost humanity’ and to be considered as ‘God’s children’. In reality, as Christians the dalits continue to live miserable lives in society and in the church.

The church in India is a dalit church, because 70% of India’s almost 25 million Christians are so-called dalits. Although they comprise the majority in all these churches, their place and influence is minimal, even insignificant. Their presence is totally eclipsed by the power of the upper-caste Christians who are only 30% of the Christian population. This is all the more true in the case of the Catholic Church where such discrimination is strongly felt. Initially, they were converted to Christianity with false promises and given sufficient amounts of money and household materials for their worldly comfort. Once they came fully under the control of the church, the authorities stopped all facilities and began asking them to contribute money and service every month, as much as 10% of their total income.

Practically every church takes up some sort of collection during the service. This is known as “tithing”. In the Catholic Church, tithes are taken during Masses that take place on Holy Days of Obligation (every Sunday and Catholic holiday such as Christmas and Easter). You may be unsure about where the money goes or why people give in the first place.

If a family fails to give the prescribed amount to the Church, no church service will be done for the dead in that family, and they will not get a place for burial at the time of death. In every church, separate burial grounds are maintained, one for rich people and one for the poor. Rich Christians reserve a place in the burial ground by giving money and construct a tomb there. For poor, the dead are buried in the same place where another body was buried. If there is no place, the old dead body is dug out and thrown in an unused well in the church compound. This being the situation, it is ridiculous that Christians preach that Christians would ascend to heaven in their entire bodies, if they believe only in Jesus. This is a hoax played on the gullible laity.

The present predicament of dalits in India is complex and confusing, and the way forward in the dalit struggle is by no means clear. However, there are a few eye-openers for Christian dalits which are that conversion to Christianity has not really enhanced their lives in any significant way, despite hopes and promises to the contrary. Most Christian dalits thus have a dual social and psychological identity, Christian as well as dalit, and have to live with the tensions built into that dual identity. A second trend is an increasing assertion of dalit identity as a positive thing, a source of pride rather than of shame.

In this, they rightly challenge pervasive cultural norms. An expression of this assertiveness is dalit theology; another is a harsh critique of missionary and Indian Church leaders who, in their efforts to “Indianise” the Church, equate “Indian” culture with Brahmanic instead of dalit culture. One reason why dalit Christians resist efforts to “Indianize” the theology and liturgy of the Church is because they are fed up with the Brahmanic culture to escape which they converted in the first place! There are persistent efforts to “raise the caste issue” and exorcise the demon of caste discrimination (which is “legion” and takes many forms) within the churches themselves. Until this is done, the churches cannot embody much “good news” for their own dalit members, let alone for other dalits.

When we study the history of Christianity we find that Christian missionaries have no hesitation in dealing callously with people who oppose them. Millions of innocent women and children were killed in most cruelly in Europe and Africa in the name of witch-hunting when they refused to convert. The witch-hunts waxed and waned for nearly three centuries, with great variations in time and space. The rate of witch hunting varied dramatically throughout Europe, ranging from a high of 26,000 deaths in Germany to a low of 4 in Ireland. [For more details see: Europe's last witch-hunt]

African Children Denounced As “Witches” By Christian Pastors

and Poor Christian Liberation Movement http://www.dalitchristian.com/ ]

Hindu dalits converted and are still converting because they do not know the history of Christianity. It is high time they enlighten themselves with facts. No upper caste Hindus could have committed the kind of atrocities that Christians have inflicted on ‘non-believers’ all over the world. In India, not only have they converted Hindus to Christianity with all kinds of false promises, they have spread surreptitious hate campaigns against Hinduism, so much so that the converted ones have started hating their natal religion.

This has vitiated family relationships and social mores. Yet Christians want Hindus to respect their Christian faith with no intentions of reciprocating. Dalits must realize that they are better off as Hindus, rather than feel lost by adopting an alien faith which is only a political religion.

During British rule, Indian industry and agriculture collapsed and large numbers became jobless. Simultaneously, the requirement of labourers for leatherwork, butchering, or removal of rubbish, animal carcasses, and human excreta increased considerably. Naturally people had to do all kinds of jobs to earn a living, including jobs considered unhygienic. Some orthodox Brahmins and so-called upper castes practiced untouchability, probably because of the unhygienic nature of the jobs some people engaged in. In those days, orthodoxy was so prevalent among the priestly clan / Brahmins that freedom fighters from these families were not allowed to dine with other family members and also not allowed to enter the temples. An example is my father who was arrested and put in jail for writing an article against British rule. But after Independence, all restrictions were lifted and he is considered a hero. Whenever anyone raises the subject of untouchability in Hindu society, we should counter by asking why foreigners used gloves while working and eat food with cutlery – they consider it unhygienic to eat with bare hands! Similarly some Hindus may have felt revulsion at some unhygienic people. Foreigners used this to divide Hindus and convert them to Christianity.

Dr. Ambedkar is blindly adored by many people. We have always seen pictures of Ambedkar in western attire. Why did he not ‘Indianise’ himself? Other Indian leaders always wore Indian attire. This shows that Ambedkar had a soft corner for the British and blindly believed what the British dished out on Hinduism. If he was concerned with the condition of dalits, why didn’t he pressurize the British to convert the service latrines to septic tank system?

The first movement for the entry of so-called low castes into temples was started by three freedom fighters in Kerala under the leadership of Gandhi. My father worked as a coordinator and sent day-to-day news to Gandhi.  The Maharaja of Travancore signed the historic Temple Entry Proclamation on November 12, 1936. Dr. Ambedkar’s name was not heard at that time. He and Nehru together adopted the Constitution that was the brain-child of the British, which has created a lot of problems for the common man of India. Our Independence was actually only a ‘transfer of power’. No major changes were made in our Constitution to suit Indians.

Sri Krishna said in the Bhagvad Gita: “Those whose wisdom has been carried away by various desires, being prompted by their own nature, worship other deities adopting rules relating to each.” – Chapt.7, verse 20.

But for Bhagwan Sri Krishna every devotee is noble: “Whatever celestial form a devotee (craving for some worldly object) chooses to worship with reverence, I stabilize the faith of that particular devotee in that form. The fruit gained by these people of small understanding, however is perishable.”

This prophecy has come true in the case of Christian dalits. Initially they got many benefits, but lost all benefits over a period of time and their condition has become worse than that of those who remained in Hinduism. All converts should read the Bhagvad Gita and return to Hinduism. Sri Narayana Guru, Sri Ayyankali ,Guru Ravidas et al were good Hindu spiritual leaders, even though they were born in dalit families.

The best way for dalit Christians is to return to their original religion of Hinduism and live as proud Hindus in their own right. We have overcome most of the discrepancies caused in our society by the Muslim invasions and British rule during the last sixty years. Since it is not the fault of Hinduism that dalits suffered discrimination in the past, it is time they studied and practiced Hinduism with an open mind.

I conclude with some common instances of discrimination in the churches:

- Construction of two chapels, one for non-dalits and one for dalits

In some parishes liturgical services are conducted separately

- Separate seating arrangements within the same chapel. Dalits are usually seated at the    two aisles. Even if there are benches or chairs, dalits are required to be seated on the floor

- Separate cemeteries and separate hearses to carry the dead (Hindus have common ghats for burning the dead for all castes)

- Separate queues to ‘receive the sacred body of Christ’. In some places, dalits are required to receive communion only after the non-dalits (almost every mandir provides free food/ ‘Annadanam’ as ‘prasadam’ to devotees irrespective of caste; they sit together in rows and partake the food; there is no separate counter for dalits for booking different offerings to the deities)

- Dalit boys are not allowed to be altar boys and lectors at the sacred liturgy (some north Indian temples allow any devotee to enter the sanctum sanctorum to pray or offer pujas; in south Indian temples only the head priest and his assistant are allowed to do so)

- Dalits are not invited to participate in the washing of feet ceremony on Maundy Thursday

for fear of claims to equal participation in the celebration of the feast of the parish patron saint, Parish Councils decide not to collect financial contribution from dalits

- The feast of the village patron saint is celebrated separately.

3.2 The Muslims

3.2.1 In America, Democratic National Convention Proceeds with 2-Hour Islamic ‘Jumah’ Prayers. / Pushpa Rajguru sent us this Mail on 29 August 2012

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/dnc-announces-2-hour-islamic-jumah-prayers-after-rejecting-cardinals-blessing-and-you-wont-believe-whos-invited/

The host committee for the Democratic National Convention is raising a number of eyebrows after choosing to proceed with featuring Islamic “Jumah” prayers for two hours on the Friday of its convention.  If this doesn‘t drive home to people where Obama’s sentiments really are, nothing will. I hope this sinks them!!

Up to 20,000 people are expected to attend the Friday prayers and Jibril Hough, a spokesman for the Bureau of Indigenous Muslim Affairs (BIMA), said its purpose is to hold political parties accountable for the issues faced by Muslim-Americans. In particular, the event will target the Patriot Act, the NYPD, the National Defense Authorization Act, and anti-Shariah sentiment. And while Muslim-Americans undeniably face distinct challenges, those who are well-informed on the dangers of radical Islam are expressing their doubts.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, a devout Muslim and the Founder and President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, wrote: The leaders of this event – Jibril Hough and Imam Siraj Wahhaj [are not] moderates. They are radicals. These individuals embrace Islamist supremacy and have demonstrated support for radical ideologies.

A quick Google search by the DNC would have shown them that Hough and Wahhaj are leaders in the separatist American Islamist movement. While they may be able to get a few thousand Muslims to attend the event, they are NOT going to be mainstream Muslims.  Most will likely come from Hough and Wahhaj’s radical networks that have long been entrenched in the Charlotte area. Make no mistake they are part of the Islamist movement.

Their jummah (group) prayer is…about empowering their Islamist and MB sympathetic groups into the very fabric of the political system so that Americans become anesthetized. We need American Muslims to speak up and marginalize these radicals. The DNC needs to understand and reject them because of their radical history and ideas.

The mosque of Jibril Hough, mentioned by Dr. Jasser, is owned by the North American Islamic Trust, which was named as an unindited co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial as one of the entities “who are and/or were members of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood.”

Siraj Wahhaj, the “Grand Imam” for Jumah at the DNC, is often considered a “moderate” because he was the first Muslim to give an invocation in the U.S. Congress, but as Robert Spencer notes, he has a number of troubling ties to dangerous radicals.  In the early 1990′s the man reportedly sponsored talks by “the Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel-Rahman in New York and New Jersey mosques, and told his followers that the United States will fall unless it “accepts the Islamic agenda.”

Wahhaj elaborated, according to bestselling author Brigitte Gabriel, to say: “If only Muslims were clever politically, they could take over the United States and replace its constitutional government with a caliphate.”

He continued: “Take my word.  If 6-8 million Muslims unite in America, the country will come to us.”

When an imam like Siraj Wahhaj says “it his duty and our duty as Muslims to replace the US Constitution with the Quran…we need to speak up!” Dr. Jasser reiterated in response, adding that Americans “should be concerned” if this is who the DNC is “consorting with.”

Robert Spencer speculates that the Democrat National Committee is simply so “in thrall to multiculturalism” that “few, if any” are even aware of the radical connections.

“To raise any concerns about such a speaker would be ‘Islamophobic,’ violating every rule of the anti-American, anti-Western ethos that prevails among so many Democrats today,” Spencer concluded.

The first amendment protects everyone – including Muslims – to practice their religion. But Islam is not like other religions – enemies of Islam will submit or be killed. They don’t share American values and their religion conflicts with the Constitution, especially Sharia Law.  Honestly, what is going through Maxine Waters’ head when she defends Sharia Law?? Has the left even thought about how pushing for gay marriage and defending Sharia Law is like mixing nitro with glycerin?

3.2.2 China officially bans Ramzan fasting for Muslim government officials and students in violent Xinjiang province
We received following E Mail on 2 August from balayogi venkataraman <balayogiv@gmail.com

"It is forbidden for Communist Party cadres, civil officials (including those who have retired) and students to participate in Ramadan religious activities."

The statement, posted on the Xinjiang government website, urged party leaders to bring "gifts" of food to local village leaders to ensure that they were eating during Ramadan.

Guidance posted on numerous government websites called on Communist Party leaders to restrict Muslim religious activities during the holy month, including fasting and visiting mosques.

Xinjiang is home to around nine million Uighurs, a Turkic speaking, largely Muslim ethnic minority, many of whom accuse China's leaders of religious and political persecution.

The region has been rocked by repeated outbreaks of ethnic violence, but China denies claims of repression and relies on tens of thousands of Uighur officials to help it govern Xinjiang.

A statement from Zonglang township in Xinjiang's Kashgar district said that "the county committee has issued comprehensive policies on maintaining social stability during the Ramadan period.

Similar orders on curbing Ramadan activities were posted on other local government websites, with the educational bureau of Wensu county urging schools to ensure that students do not enter mosques during Ramadan.

The holy month began in Xinjiang on July 20. The orders to curb religious activities were sent out across the region at different times, some before the start of Ramadan and some afterwards. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and strive to be more pious and charitable.

An exiled rights group, the World Uyghur Congress, warned the policy would force "the Uighur people to resist (Chinese rule) even further. By banning fasting during Ramadan, China is using administrative methods to force the Uighur people to eat in an effort to break the fasting," said group spokesman Dilshat Rexit in a statement.

Xinjiang saw its worst ethnic violence in recent times in July, 2009, when Uighurs attacked members of the nation's dominant Han ethnic group in the city of Urumqi, sparking clashes in which 200 people from both sides died, according to the government.

Our comment – What happened to the Islamic Brotherhood of man? We were told that if you hit one Muslim you face wrath of the entire Muslim World. But We did not see any demonstrations in U.K or Arab countries. It is we Hindus who are cowards.  We can’t even hang Afzal Guru and Kasab.

3.2.3 Pakistan worse than hell for Ahmadis

We received following Mail from Nagraj Patil on 13 July 13 2012

While all minorities in Pakistan are under threat, the country has turned as an inferno especially for Ahmadi minorities and either converting their religion or quitting the country seems the only way of their survival.

Pakistan turned like hell for Ahmadis since 1974 when they were declared non-Muslims through the Second Amendment under the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto government. When General Zia ul Haq came to power, he brought about even more draconian anti-Ahmadi laws. For decades now, their persecution at the hands of bigots has largely been ignored because of these laws. Defending the rights of the Ahmaddiya community is considered an anathema in Pakistani society.

On Tuesday night six minarets of an Ahmadi place of worship, Baitul Hamd, were demolished by the Kharian city police in Pakistan's Punjab province. The demolition took place on the application of some clerics from Barelvi religious organisation called Tehrik-e-Tahaffuz-e-Islam.

The application asked the police to take action under the Section 298 B and C of the 1984 ordinance, which declares it illegal for Ahmadis to act or look like Muslims, to practice or propagate their faith and to call their worship place a "mosque".

However, there was no court order for demolition. According to Nasir Dar, a local spokesperson of the Ahmadis in Kharian, the six minarets had already been demolished whereas the police would demolish the two bigger ones later on as one was attached to the worship place's electric supply and the other would fall on the building if not taken apart with the help of skilled labour.

Police officer Raja Zahid who led the police team said, "We made sure that we were respectful, but the law of 298-B clearly states that Qadianis cannot call their worship place a 'mosque', so if it cannot be called that, then it cannot resemble the mosque either."

Baitul Hamd was built in 1980, four years before the 1984 ordinance. Saleemuddin, the spokesperson for the Ahmadi community in Pakistan, said, "Is there a patent for the design of a minaret that these people have? All kinds of buildings have minarets and domes as part of their designs; then why can't the Ahmadis retain the ones which are on the pre-1984 worship places?"

For Ahmadis, every day brings forth new incidents of harassment; they feel very unsafe all around Pakistan.

In January 2012, local rigid circles asked the Ahmadis at Satellite Town in Rawalpindi to stop worships in the 'Ewan-e-Tawheed', the place they are using for the last 17 years. It is the property of Jamaat Ahmaddiya and is used as a place for prayers ever since. The building, according to Ahmadis, was built after the group purchased the land. As a registered organisation, under the relevant rules, they can carry out worship in the building. And after getting permission from the district administration, they installed moveable barriers and a few security guards, but the barriers and guards were removed from the main road in front of the building after some people objected to their presence.

The religious centre was shifted to the current building because the old centre in a building near Committee Chowk in Rawalpindi could not accommodate the worshippers.

On this occasion a press release of Ahmadis appeared that read, "The (Ahmaddiya) community is under attack and there are known security threats to community members from these miscreants. Yet innocent and peaceful Ahmadis are not even allowed to defend or protect themselves."

There is zero tolerance for Ahmadis and their practices in Pakistan. The hatred towards Ahmadis is not only limited to the religious extremist but some people representing other political parties are also behind such activities.  Quite recently a newspaper reported that Lahore Bar Association had banned Shezan (juices) in the lower court complexes of Lahore that fell under the LBA's area of activity.

The reports, which quoted LBA president Chaudhry Zulfiqar as confirming the restriction, said the decision had been justified on the basis of an understanding that the company which produced Shezan had Ahmadis as its owners. Later on when the issue was raised by the media, Chaudhry Zulfiqar denied the report. Actually a group Khatm-i-Nabuwwat Lawyers' Forum was behind this move.

Like the worship places of Ahmadis, the publications of the sect have also been banned. Last week Pakistan Telecommunication Authority banned a website by the name alislam.org which was controlled by the Ahmaddiya community.

An official of the authority said that the site had been blocked because Ahmadis were not allowed to propagate their religious views under the constitution of Pakistan. The PTA had already blocked several sites with inappropriate content, he added.

Some media reports said that the website was accused of blasphemy against the Holy Prophet and the Muttahida Ulema Board had demanded to shut down the site.

In February this year, Monthly Misbah, a women's magazine published by the Ahmaddiya community in Pakistan for decades, was ordered to be banned on the recommendation of a board of clerics constituted by Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab.

The district coordination officer, Chiniot, Dr Irshad Ahmad, issued orders to immediately ban the publication because the Muttahida Ulema Board made the 'observation' to cancel the magazine's 'declaration'.

"In the light of the… observation," wrote DCO in his order, "I am convinced that monthly magazine Misbah is being published in contravention of Press, Newspapers, News Agencies and Books Registration Ordinance 2002."

"It was informed that propagation of Qadianiat (another terminology for Ahmaddiya faith) is a crime Under Section 298-C of PPC," wrote Dr Ahmad in his official order of February 15, 2012.

"The monthly Misbah has been declared as propagating Qadianiat and as such recommended to be banned by Muttahida Ulema Board Punjab."

Although Ahmadis face threats from different enemies like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Sipahi Sahaba Pakistan, but for them the worst enemy is Punjabi Taliban which is affiliated to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. On 28 May, 2010, two Ahmadi mosques were attacked by militants in Lahore in which 86 Ahmadis were killed.

Hardly there was a politician to condemn or condone the incident apart from slain Punjab Governor Salaman Taseer. Salaman Taseer himself was killed by the extremists when he spoke against Blasphemy Act of the country. Claiming responsibility for attacking Ahmadis' worshipping places, Punjabi Taliban spokesperson Mansoor Maawia had termed the Ahmadis 'worse than Jews'. He said, "No Ahmadi would live with peace in Pakistan. Our war against them and their followers will continue."

Our comment – But still Ahamadis will not say that they are Ahmadis and NOT Muslims!!

3.2.4 Islam – what do we teach our children?

During many Inter faith meetings and religious studies we Hindus merely accept that

Islam means praying five times a day / fasting during the month of Ramadan/

giving certain amount of income to charity / making a pilgrimage to Mecca at least one in a life time.

But we do not mention their the core beliefs namely -

(1) Muhammed is the last Prophet.

(2) Those who do not believe in him are Kafirs and have to be killed.

(3) It is duty of every Muslim to spread Islam by hook or crook. There is to be no let up until the entire world becomes Islamic.

(4) If a Muslim changes his religion he is to be killed. This is according to Holy Koran

No Muslim could argue against this. Hindus are always shy about the word Kafir, but it is one of the basic principles of Islam. How to deal with Kafirs is also ordained in Koran and there can be NO CHANGES to Koran. That is the truth.

It is immaterial how many times Muslims pray or whether or not they go to Mecca.

Muslims boast about above core beliefs. Why are we scared to tell the truth?
