Author: Ian Austen / Publication: The New York Times / Date: June 2, 2015
That is the conclusion reached by the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission after six years of intensive research, including 6,750 interviews. The commission published a summary version on Tuesday of what will ultimately be a multivolume report, documenting widespread physical, cultural and sexual abuse at government-sponsored residential schools that Indian, Inuit and other indigenous children were forced to attend.
The schools, financed by the government but run largely by churches, were in operation for more than a century, from 1883 until the last one closed in 1998. The commission documented that at least 3,201 students died while attending the schools, many because of mistreatment or neglect, in the first comprehensive tally of such deaths. The report linked the abuses at the schools, which came to broad public attention over the last four decades, to social, health, economic and emotional problems affecting many indigenous Canadians today. It concluded that although some teachers and administrators at the schools were well intentioned, the overriding motive for the program was economic, not educational.
“The Canadian government pursued this policy of cultural genocide because it wished to divest itself of its legal and financial obligations to aboriginal people and gain control over their lands and resources,” the report said. “If every aboriginal person had been ‘absorbed into the body politic,’ there would be no reserves, no treaties and no aboriginal rights.”
The
Canadian government apologized to former students in a landmark 2008 court
settlement and established the commission to document what had happened and to
reconcile
The commission, led by Justice Murray Sinclair, an Ojibwa who was the first aboriginal judge in the province of Manitoba, said Tuesday that it would take considerable effort and significant social, legal and political changes to achieve that mandate.
“A just reconciliation requires more than simply talking about the need to heal the deep wounds of history,” the report said. “Words of apology alone are insufficient; concrete actions on both symbolic and material fronts are required.”
In contrast, the commission found that “all too often, policies and programs are still based on faded notions of assimilation.”
In
its report, the commission offered 94 recommendations, including an overhaul of
the child welfare system for aboriginal children, which continues to produce
cases of abuse and neglect, and a change in
A principal recommendation is a step that has long been a sore point between aboriginal groups and the government. The report repeatedly calls on the government to fully adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as the basis of a new relationship.
Canada,
along with the United States, Australia and New Zealand, has been reluctant to
take that step, saying instead that the country endorses the declaration only
as a “non-legally-binding
aspirational document.”
The major sticking point is the declaration’s requirement that issues involving the lands, territories and resources of aboriginal people be subject to their “prior and informed consent.” The government is concerned that the requirement would essentially give aboriginal groups a sweeping veto over Canadian law.
The commission said, however, that the declaration affirmed rights already held by native groups under treaties with the government and was consistent with recent decisions by the Supreme Court of Canada related to aboriginal rights.
Aboriginal groups and the government see reconciliation very differently, the report said: The government appears to believe that it involves aboriginal people’s accepting “the reality and validity” of the government’s power “in order to allow the government to get on with business.”
“Aboriginal people, on the other hand, see reconciliation as an opportunity to affirm their own sovereignty and return to the ‘partnership’ ambitions they held,” the report said.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government has had a strained relationship with indigenous people, even though it was Mr. Harper who made the apology in 2008. When a reporter at a news conference on Tuesday asked whether the Conservatives were at all likely to adopt the commission’s recommendations, Justice Sinclair said, “We are writing for the future, not just for this government,” a remark that met with prolonged applause and cheers from the largely aboriginal audience.
Bernard
Valcourt, the aboriginal affairs minister, said Tuesday: “This dark chapter in
Leaders of the Protestant churches that ran many of the schools apologized long ago. But the report and Justice Sinclair urged Pope Francis to formally take that step for the Roman Catholic Church, which ran some of the schools, saying that apologies from local Catholic officials were not enough.
The research and interviews conducted by the commission detailed a boarding school system that was woefully underfunded, inadequately staffed and largely ineffective at its stated aim of providing useful education.
Some former students interviewed by the commission cited school sports and music and arts programs as bright spots in their lives. But those programs were not generally part of the system, and most former students, even those who were not physically or sexually harmed or neglected, said their daily lives had been heavily regimented and lacked privacy and dignity. At many of the schools, students were addressed and referred to by number as if they were prisoners.
“In the school, I didn’t have a name,” Lydia Ross, a former student, told the commission. “I had No. 51, No. 44, No. 32, No. 16, No. 11 and then finally No. 1, when I was just coming to high school.”
The commission found that the government had in effect blocked criminal investigations of some sexual predators employed at the schools. The report documented widespread bullying and beating involving both staff members and older students.
Many staff members were paid poorly, and the government justified the policy by arguing that “because many employees belonged to missionary organizations, pay was a ‘minor consideration,’ ” the commission found. Nuns at one school in the 1960s were paid just $50 a month, the report said, a situation that made its principal “feel like a heel.”
The report documented instances in which students tried to burn down their schools or died after running away from schools in remote locations. Justice Sinclair said at the news conference that although the commission was able to document 3,201 student deaths, research suggested that 6,000 or more may have died.
A
disproportionate number of aboriginal people are imprisoned in
People raised in the schools, the report said, “sometimes found it difficult to become loving parents.” Those who were abused often went on to abuse other people as adults, or fell victim to substance abuse.
“Students who were treated and punished like prisoners in the schools often graduated to real prisons,” the commission wrote. “For many, the path from residential school to prison was a short one.”

The Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,
Please stop this subsidy in Parliament and utilize this money to feed the poor of this country who cannot afford 2 meals a day, even one meal a day. Parliament canteens serving MPs got a total subsidy of Rs 60.7 crore during last five years an RTI reply shows.
Journalists also enjoy this subsidized food in the canteen may be that is the reason no one had bought this up ever strongly and asked questions to the lawmakers.
We pay taxes for their salary, perks, travel, stay everything. Should we pay for their food also? Can’t they afford their own food? … With 442 crorepatis (millionaires) in the 16th Lok Sabha they need subsidy for food? Parliamentarians, earning over Rs 1.4 lakh with perks, are relishing items like fish fried with chips at Rs 25, mutton cutlet at Rs 18, boiled vegetables at Rs 5, mutton curry with bone at Rs 20 and masala dosa at Rs 6
The cost for procuring raw items of dish like stew vegetables comes to about Rs 41.25 while the MPs are getting it for Rs 4. For the non-vegetarian meal raw items are procured at Rs 99.05 while the prepared dish is served at Rs 33 to MPs. The reply provided to RTI shows that the present rates of dishes have not been revised from December 20, 2010. The reply shows that canteens received a subsidy of Rs 10.4 crore, 11.7 crore, 11.9 crore, 12.5 crore and 14 crore during the years 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14 respectively, which totals to around Rs 60.7 crore.
I request you to stop this subsidy
and let the MPs pay for what they eat

All this money landed into the coffers of various NGOs. There was a

The Bangalore Initiative for Religious Dialogue (BIRD) had conducted a survey
pertaining to religious conversions. It had found that there was an aggressive
marketing strategy by some missionaries involved in conversions undertaken by
evangelists and they were using unethical means to convert.
They dole out incentives and force conversions not for the sake of religion but

He also notes that some people are given jobs and told to convert. If they

their Hindu Gods were the corrupt version of Christ.

While speaking to one officer with the Intelligence Bureau he says that
successive governments in the past have turned a blind eye.
These missionaries have the money to shut the politician up.
Moreover they make it look like a suo motu conversion thus dodging the law
which clearly states that only forced conversions are punishable.
Moreover the lure of money is so high that not too many come forward and

The IB officer also notes that for every 1,000 conversions there is one

and also these missionaries take advantage of extreme poverty conditions of

Our comments - We are extremely lucky that now
we know our enemies. It gives an excellent opportunity for Indian Government to
keep dossiers on ALL of them.
Will they take it?
4.1.2 On 14 October 2015, came the news that after the Dadri episode in U P. Sahitya Academy awards were returned by a group of novelists, poets, writers, ‘intellectuals’ as they would like to be known and worshipped by the neo-literate classes and illiterate masses, has returned awards given by, or resigned from, the Sahitya Akademi, a tax-funded relic from the era when umbrellas would be taken out in Delhi every time it rained in Moscow.
First was Uday Prakash, then Novelist Nayantara Sahgal,
daughter of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, niece of Jawaharlal Nehru,.Nayantara Sahgal
declared she was returning her reward,
timing the announcement in a manner it would make it to prime time news
bulletins. Soon after, poet Ashok Vajpeyi said he too was returning his reward.
Novelist Shashi Deshpande and poet Satchidanandan have resigned from
These
intellectuals are ostensibly angered by the ‘shrinking space for dissent’ and
the ‘attacks on cultural diversity’, the ‘increasing intolerance towards
freedom of expression’ and the ‘rise of fascism’ with the ‘advent of a Hindutva
Government’ headed by Narendra Modi. They are aghast that rationalists like
Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare have been killed in cold blood in
Their decision, which increasingly appears to be a well-coordinated move, follows the Dadri incidence in western U P, a back-of-beyond place of which nobody, more so the intellectuals, knew anything till a tragedy was blown out of proportion. Which begets the question: If one death can upset them, if the murder of two rationalists and a writer can wound their conscience, if stray comments by loudmouths who don saffron or have found a place in Team Modi for inexplicable reasons, can make them feel it’s Kristallnacht in India, where was their conscience, their spirit, their ethics all these years and decades?
Nayantara
Sahgal had no compunction about accepting the Sahitya Akademi award two years
after the grisly and gruesome anti-Sikh pogrom on her nephew’s watch. Rajiv
Gandhi’s deplorable ‘when a big tree falls the earth is bound to shake’
justification of the slaughter of 3,500 Sikhs by Congress goons did not upset
her. The
Our comments – Once again we had an excellent to know who
our enemies are and keep
dossiers on them for future use, but who would do this?
4.1.3 Hanging of Yakub Memon involved in Mumbai attack.
On 4 August
2015, one of the masterminds of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts Yakub Memon was
finally hanged. His was a transparent case and the he had recourse to the best
lawyers in the country to defend him to the very end. But the victims of
terrorism had to wait 22 long years to get justice, the price of a democracy
with an independent judiciary. The government of the day acted with firmness to
execute the court order. Yakub’s actions along
with those of others, led to the death of 257 people and injured over 1,500
people. And yet there was massive agitation against the death sentence!
Our comments - How strange that
our Hindu friends keep quiet whenever Muslim women are stoned to death in
Islamic countries, even in
The Governor of Tripura went
against the grain. After hundreds turned out to receive Yakub Memon’s body in
Mumbai, he said, “Intelligence should keep a tab on all (except relatives and
close friends) who assembled for Yakub Memon’s corpse burial. Many are
potential terrorists.”
Anti-nationals
had made a hero out of a terrorist. In fact, one could argue that those who
tried hard to save this butcher of hundreds of innocents and made loud cries
even against the Supreme Court verdict should be kept under watch. Also, the
intelligence agencies should keep a tab on media funds because the Press also
made Yakub Memon a hero. It is so shameful to see this.
It has
been rightly said that, “anybody siding with the enemy and waging a war against
the nation will henceforth be culled mercilessly, as he has forfeited, his
right to live, for taking the life of others. Humanitarianism is for humans and
not for animals”
What a
tragedy, internal security should be vigilant, specifically for those jaydraths
— the 40 people who signed the petition should be closely watched. These are
the people who worry about injustice to mass murderers, but do not care about
those who are murdered.
There is
a competition between the print media and visual media to sensationalise news,
and only a few of them have reminded the people, about the past incidents of
terrorism, including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. There have been 13 terror

around 3pm with automatic weapons and hand grenades. They started firing on men
women and children and killed 31 people and injured 80. Both terrorists were
gunned down by National Security Guard commandos by night. As many as 31

4.3 Horrors of American policy
On 2 December 2015 we heard a news very briefly – a man found his birth mother after
more than 30 years.
Salvador Allende of Chile was a Communist, but was elected by people to be their President. Americans would not have it. CIA chief George Bush asked the army chief to object. He said, “Allende has been elected by the people. How can I object?”
So, Bush asked Augusto Pinochet to murder the army chief and on 11 September 1973
Pinochet organized a military coup and killed Allende too. Pinochet tortured many of Allende’s supporters. Worst was that his men removed newly born babies from their mothers and they were given for adoption to Pinochet’s supporters. He remained in power till 1990.
Nothing can be more barbaric, but as long as he supported
American interests that’s o.k. Americans have no shame. Margaret Thatcher also supported
Pinochet at all times.
Did we not see the same in
What a disgrace!
4.4 Importance of writing in English In September 2015 we had several E Mails repeating false history relating to battle of Panipat in 1761. The contention was - Hindu Lost to Muslims due to idol worship - What does History Teach us?
Godbole replied – Battle of Panipat 1761
A lot of falsehood has been spread about this episode.
Two Maratha Historians, Setu Madhavrao Pagdi and Prof N R Phatak had authored a book called Panipatacha Sangram Part 1, published in 1961. This was to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle.
It was expected that more parts will follow. That did not happen.
Alas, even Part 1 remained in Marathi. No Government of Maharashtra ever thought
of translating such works into English for wider readership. Hence the misconcepts in the minds of non-Marathi people even after 50 years!
4.5 Why we can’t tell the truth
In November 2015 there was a programme on British TV. It shows how large Supermarkets have a stranglehold on small farmers. It showed the case of a small family farmer who produces parsnips. But the Supermarket Morrisons had put restriction on the type of parsnips it will accept (shape and size). As a result large amount of parsnips go to waste. Mother Nature will not produce parsnips according to wishes of the Supermarket. But as soon as the small farmer dared to speak out Morrisons terminated their contract. No wonder small family farmers are terrified. They are scared of losing their livelihood.
This is the reality of life in
